The latest job market figures serve as a reminder of the dynamic and challenging landscape we face right now. According to Stats NZ, New Zealand’s unemployment rate has climbed to 5.3% — the highest it’s been in nearly nine years. Youth unemployment has also risen sharply, highlighting the growing need for targeted support and opportunity creation across industries.

These numbers tell an important story: one of economic adjustment, business uncertainty, and shifting workforce priorities. But they also underscore the value of connection, of people, purpose, and the kind of genuine support that makes a difference when times are tough.

It’s against this backdrop that we were thrilled to see our Area Sales Manager, Shauna O’Sullivan, appear on 1NewsNZ to share her insights on what this means for both employers and job seekers, and the role we at Remarkable People are playing in navigating these changes.

In her segment, Shauna emphasised several key points:

  • The importance of genuine candidate care and support, especially when job-seeking is tougher than usual. From regular check-ins to practical upskilling advice, candidates deserve real people in their corner.
  • How organisations must adapt to meet the changing needs of both talent and employers, from matching skills to recognising the growing value of soft skills like adaptability, teamwork, and communication.
  • That our mission to “put people first” isn’t just a slogan — it’s a strategy. Especially in uncertain times, leading with empathy and integrity helps build stronger, more resilient teams.

At Remarkable People, we see these market shifts as an opportunity to double down on what matters most, people. While the numbers reflect real challenges, they also remind us why we do what we do: to create opportunities, support our communities, and connect people with roles where they can truly thrive.

As we move into the next chapter of New Zealand’s labour market, our focus remains clear, to make a tangible impact through authentic relationships, local insight, and a people-first approach that drives both personal and business success.
